The Penn State Alumni AssociationWhat’s been happening: I did my graduate work in history with Professor Edward Thanden and received my PHD in 1970. I received a post-doctoral fellowship from IREX and spent 1970-1971 in Leningrad. While there I met and married my wife, Dr. Maia Kipp. I got a position in Russian History at Kansas State University, where I taught from 1971 to 1985. In 1986 I joined the Soviet Army Studies Office (SASO) at Ft. Leavenworth , KS, as a senior analyst. SASO became the Foreign Military Studies Office (FMSO)in 1991. In 2003 I became the Director of FMSO and served in that capacity until 2006, when I became Deputy Director of the School of Advanced Military Studies. I retired from that position in 2009. I have published extensively in Russian military and naval history,and served as the founding US editor for the journal "European Security" from 1991 to 2001. I was elected to the Section on Security and Geopolitics of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and received its Kapitsa Medal for contributions to international security. I continue to be involved in Russian studies as a adjunct professor of Russian and East European Studies at the University of Kansas. Masha and I have one son, Aleksandr. |
